Collecting

Collecting early maps

Early maps, especially those from the Seventeenth and Eighteenth century, were predominantly printed on high quality hand pulped cloth paper and this continued to the end of the Eighteenth century when automated processes and inferior, cheaper papers appeared. This is why so many early antique maps and manuscripts have survived to this day, quality paper and the fact even back then, they were collectable and prized possessions. As the maps are made of paper, their current condition can vary and we try to highlight any defects, tears, staining etc as accurately as possible, we want you to be as happy with your purchase. Where a map has been mounted onto a backing plate we will inform you if we are aware. Most maps come pre fixed on a neutral green board and un framed. There are numerous books on the subject which advise the would be collector on how to and what to collect. Always be aware of forgeries and offers that are too good to be true. We have all been caught!
